General information
Cycrin contains such an active element as medroxyprogesterone acetate which is a derivative of progesterone. It is used in a wide range of menstrual disorders that results from a lack of progesterone in a female body. Medroxyprogesterone acetate capsules are effective in the treatment of secondary amenorrhea (cessation of menstruation); uterine abnormal bleeding caused by hormonal disbalance. This medicine also prevents endometrial hyperplasia in postmenopausal women who have not undergone a hysterectomy and are receiving conjugated estrogens. Medroxyprogesterone is also used for contraception and for treating endometrial or renal cancer.
Directions
Take this medication exactly as your doctor has prescribed it. You must carefully follow all directions. Avoid exceeding your dose or taking the medication longer than it was advised by your doctor. The standard recommended dosage of the medroxyprogesterone is 5 or 10 mg taken daily. Amenorrhea is treated for 5 to 10 days. Abnormal uterine bleeding is treated for 5 to 10 days beginning on day 16 or 21 of the menstrual cycle. Endometrial hyperplasia is treated for 12 to 14 days.
Precautions
Consult your doctor in case you are hypersensitive to the medroxyprogesterone acetate; in case you are pregnant or breastfeeding a child. Avoid smoking or taking alcohol beverages while you are taking this medicine. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids, meals, food supplements and other medications you are allowed to take concurrently with this drug.
Contraindications
This medicine is contraindicated in patients suffering from thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorders, cerebral apoplexy, liver or kidney disease, diabetes, breast malignancy, uterine cancer, excessive vaginal bleeding, missed abortion, hypersensitivity to medroxyprogesterone acetate. Medroxyprogesterone is able to inhibit fertility and it is contraindicated in pregnant women.
Possible side effect
Women that have taken progestins, including Cycrin, experienced following adverse reactions:
breakthrough bleeding, menstrual period changing, amenorrhea, edema, increased or decreased weight, changes in cervical erosion and cervical secretions, jaundice, allergic reactions that include urticaria, skin rash, itching, redness, swelling of the tongue, lips, face, throat, mental depression and confusion, high fever, insomnia, nausea, somnolency, faintness, headache, nervousness, fatigue, backache, hirsutism, erythema multiforme, erythema nodosum. This is not a complete list of all possible side effects. Others may occur in some patients and there may be some side effects not known yet. In case you have experienced any side effect not listed above, immediately notify your doctor or local poison centre.
Drug interactions
This medicine is able to interact with Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren). It can provoke the elimination of the medroxyprogesterone by the liver. This interaction results in lowering the concentration of the medroxyprogesterone in the blood, therefore it reduces the effectiveness of the medroxyprogesterone.
Missed dose
In case you have missed to take a dose of this medication, take it as soon as possible. If you are already supposed to take the next dose, do not take the dose you forgot and keep your ordinary dosing schedule. Do not take two dosages right away.
Overdose
If you think you overdosed the medicine, immediately contact your local poison center and notify your doctor or pharmacist. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. You may need urgent medical attention. Usually the symptoms of overdose include nausea, emesis, breast tenderness, vaginal discharge, vertigo, somnolency.
Storage
This medication is stored in a cool dry place, away from sources of sunlight, heat and moisture. Donot store it in the bathroom. Keep this product out of the reach of children and pets.
